Retirement Plan Disaster Assistance May Be Available for Several Disasters
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued Major Disaster Declarations on September 1, 2026, for the following events.
North Dakota Severe Storms, Straight-line Winds, and Tornadoes, for the incident period June 7 through June 9, 2026.
Texas Severe Storms, Straight-line Winds, Tornadoes, and Flooding, for the incident period of July 12 and continuing.
Hawaii Earthquake, for the incident period of May 22.
Kentucky Severe Storms, Straight-line Winds, Flooding, Landslides, and Mudslides, for the incident period of June 26 through June 30, 2026.
South Dakota Severe Storms, Straight-line Winds, Tornadoes, and Flooding, for the incident period of June 28 through July 3, 2026.
Missouri Severe Storms, Straight-line Winds, and Flooding, for the period July 9 through July 11, 2026.
Kansas Severe Storms, Straight-line Winds, Tornadoes, and Flooding, for the incident period of June 4 through June 15, 2026.
Oglala Sioux Tribe Severe Storms, Straight-line Winds, and Flooding, for the incident period of June 2 through June 4, 2026.
Iowa Severe Storms and Flooding, for the incident period of July 1 through July 4, 2026.
Kansas Severe Storms, Straight-line Winds, Tornadoes, and Flooding, for the incident period of June 18 through June 30, 2026.
Colorado Wildfires, Flooding, and Mudslides, for the period of June 27 through June 29, 2026.
For a limited period of time following a disaster declaration, eligible IRA owners and employer plan participants may take qualified disaster recovery distributions and recontribute qualified home purchase distributions that they recently received. In addition, plan participants may qualify for plan loan relief and additional hardship distributions.

Taxpayers should review the IRS’ disaster relief frequently asked questions and Form 8915-F, Qualified Disaster Retirement Plan Distributions and Repayments and its instructions, in addition to consulting with their tax advisor to understand the impact of the various disaster related options on their own situation.
