Phillip Gillespie is Chief Legal, Risk, and Compliance Officer of Ascensus, where he oversees the organization's legal strategy, enterprise risk management, and regulatory compliance functions. With more than 30 years of experience in the financial services and asset management industries, he has built his career leading high‑performing legal teams, guiding firms through complex regulatory environments, and driving transformative change across global organizations. Phillip joined Ascensus in 2025, bringing deep expertise in asset management, securities regulation, and governance. Before joining Ascensus, he served as Senior Counsel at WilmerHale, advising investment management clients on regulatory, transactional, and compliance matters. Previously, he was Executive Vice President and General Counsel for State Street Global Advisors, where he managed global legal affairs for one of the world’s largest asset managers. Earlier in his career, Phillip held senior legal roles at Oppenheimer Funds, Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, and Chancellor LGT Asset Management, and served as Senior Counsel with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Phillip holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and a Juris Doctor from Tulane Law School. He has also served as an adjunct professor at Boston University Law School, teaching in its Banking and Financial Services program since 2020.
